Established in Japan in 1947, Edwin is one of the great pioneers of the denim world, and one of the most popular brands around with those who appreciate a high quality pair of jeans. These denims will last for many years and develop a fantastic patina over time, particularly so the raw and unwashed versions.
Shop Edwin DenimSomething we get asked a lot here at Fat Buddha Store is “How do Edwin jeans fit?”. More specifically, our customers regularly ask us how the different styles compare with one another.
Most Edwin jeans are sanforized, so expect minimal shrinkage when washing. Edwin often cut their jeans a little generously, so for a closer fit you may want to size down by an inch or two on the waist, although most people won’t have any problems if buying true to size.
To help you find that perfect pair, here we provide an overview of the different fits available.
New for 2022, Edwin’s latest Made in Japan range uses a simplified naming system that makes finding the fit you want more straightforward than the brand’s previous numbered system.
The Made in Japan range is an exciting celebration of the most popular styles the company has produced since 1947, tailored for today’s denim enthusiasts. The collection offers jeans in a range of high quality fabrics including some superb selvedge denims, and are all made in Japan by the denim experts at Edwin.
If you feel more comfortable with jeans that are a little less tight around your thighs, the Loose Straight could be ideal. It features the classic straight shape that's so versatile for any type of lifestyle. This model replaces the ED-39 and is the loosest fitting cut from the Made in Japan range.
The Loose Straight offers a high rise and button fly, and is a great choice if you want a little more room for comfort. Raw, rinsed, faded and used washes are available, and fabric choices include Edwin’s famous rainbow selvedge in 13.5oz dark pure indigo Nihon Menpu denim and 14oz Kurabo selvedge.

These jeans have a well-defined style, providing the roominess of a loose thigh without any excess cloth at the ankle. Replacing the popular ED-45, the cut of the Loose Tapered creates subtle shaping that makes the jeans easy to wear at any time and are a good looking, comfortable choice.
The Loose Tapered cut features the classic five pockets with top stitching and rivets. The design has a button fly and a comfortable high rise that fits at the waist. As you’d expect from Edwin, this fit is available in some fantastic denim fabrics and washes including 13oz Kaihara right hand, 11oz Kairhara selvedge and 14oz Kurabo selvedge.

An all round classic fitting cut with a slightly tapered leg, the Denim Regular Tapered is suited to almost anyone and is one of the most popular fits from the Made in Japan range. If you want jeans that are midway between being loose and tight around the seat and upper thigh, but also like the modern lines of a tapered leg, then this model will be right up your street and is just about perfect for everyday wear.
Replacing the ED-55, the Regular Tapered creates a stylishly tapered silhouette with a mid-rise that finishes around the hips. The design is available in many classic colour options and fabrics, including unwashed Kurabo Red Selvedge that are perfect for making your mark, and Yoshiko Left Hand in the fantastic Akira wash for a more vintage look.

A great choice for anyone looking for a slim and contemporary silhouette, Edwin’s Slim Tapered jeans fit closer than the Regular Taper and are cut closer to the leg all with a taper that goes all the way down to the ankle. This model replaces the ED-80, which has been a big seller for Edwin, and we think the updated Made in Japan model is even better. Comfortable up top, cut close but not too close to the leg, and a neat finish to highlight your footwear; the Slim Tapered is just about the perfect slim fit jean.
This contemporary classic has a low to mid rise that sits comfortably below the waist. Some models feature a button fly while others use a zipper, and the range is available in an extensive choice of washes and denims including selvedge, non-selvedge and stretch. You’ll find everything from black and unwashed indigo through to light blue and used options.

The closest fitting model in Edwin’s Made in Japan range, the Skinny fits close to the leg all the way down. This is the leanest and most uncluttered fit from the brand. As you’d expect from Edwin, these are skinny jeans done right - they offer a sleek silhouette that’s easy to wear, but with enough room to stay comfortable.
The Skinny range from Edwin replaces the ED-85 and is slightly closer fitting than the Slim Taper, rather than being an ultra skinny fit that makes you look like you’re wearing leggings. They feature a low rise that’s cut to fit low on the hip and typically come with a zip fly. There are a number of classic Edwin washes and some great denim choices in the Skinny range which are made from stretch denim for that extra bit of comfort.

As experts in creating high quality denim, Edwin has gained legions of fans over the years, and prior to the release of Made in Japan denim used a numbered system for its model range. The numbers correspond to a year, and each pair resembles jeans made at that time. For example, the ED-45 fits looser, like a classic pair of jeans made in 1945, while the ED-80 is a slimmer fit as you’d find on Edwin jeans made in 1980. As a general rule of thumb the higher the number, the slimmer the jeans will be.
Straight Leg - High Rise
Possibly the most classic of Edwin cuts, the Nashville has remained in the collection while other models have been replaced by the latest Made in Japan fits. The Nashville features a traditional straight leg along with a higher rise for a fit akin to a pair of vintage denims from the '50s. At one point the style was discontinued by Edwin Japan, but in response to the scale of demand by customers for high quality classic cut jeans, the Nashville was embraced by Edwin Europe.
While by no means baggy, this cut is one of Edwin's more looser fitting and also sits higher on the hips, making it ideal for those with larger legs or simply anyone who wants a classic looking pair of vintage American style denims.
Loose Tapered - Medium Rise
The Edwin ED-45 has proven to be a hit since it was introduced. This cut features a loose thigh with a tapered leg, offering a contemporary twist on the classic denim look. It's slightly looser in the thigh than the similar ED-55, while the taper from the calf towards the foot keeps the silhouette modern.
If you want something with more room towards the top end than a slim or skinny fit, but still want something contemporary, then the ED-45 comes highly recommended. With a mid-rise, this model is cut to be worn on the hip and works well in any casual outfit. Classic Edwin button fly detailing is present, as are the leather belt patch and pocket rivets.
Regular Straight - Medium Rise
An Edwin take on a regular fit jean, the ED-47 will suit almost all body types for casual, everyday wear. This is a classic, regular cut that is neither too slim nor too loose. Think of a classic pair of Levi 501s and you’ll be somewhere near.
With a straight leg and low to medium rise, the Edwin-ED47 is a great all round jean and works well in almost every situation. It can be matched with sneakers or boots and, thanks to the classic proportions of the cut, will outlive any trends or fashions that come and go, remaining simply a great fitting and classic looking pair of jeans.
Relaxed Tapered - Medium Rise
The ED-55 is one of Edwin's most popular styles, being a modern take on a classic fit. These jeans can be worn by practically anyone and will suit most outfits which is perhaps why they are one of the brand’s biggest sellers.
Edwin ED-55 jeans feature a relaxed fit around the thigh area which, combined with the medium rise, makes them extremely comfortable. Not quite as roomy as a loose fit, yet with more room than a slimmer style, this model could be considered a great allrounder and perfect for those with larger legs who want a contemporary look. There is a slight taper down the lower leg to the foot for a clean and modern finish. Available in the fantastic range of washes and denim fabrics you’d expect from Edwin, a button fly and traditional Edwin detailing complete the look.
Slim Tapered - Medium Rise
One of Edwin’s more contemporary models, the ED-80 is a slimmer fitting jean that can perfectly straddle both smart and casual looks. The cut is slimmer in the thigh and tapered down to the cuff for a neat and modern look, while the longer yoke and rise provide comfort around the crotch area.
The Edwin ED-80 is available in a range of denims and washes, including Edwin’s famous rainbow and red listed selvedge fabrics. This model is a great choice if you’re looking for a modern cut but don’t want to sacrifice anything in the way of comfort.
Slim Tapered - Medium Rise
The ED-85 is one of the closest to a skinny fit offered by the brand. The fit is slim through the thigh and tapered for a contemporary style. But despite its slim fit, the low crotch ensures comfort. Offering a sleeker look than some of the looser models, the ED-85 works perfectly for both casual and smarter situations, being easy to dress up or down.
The Edwin ED-85 is available in a wide range of washes and in selvedge and non-selvedge options. These jeans feature a zipped fly, leather Edwin branded belt patch to the rear and classic Edwin back pocket stitching.
Whatever style of jeans you’re looking for, whether a looser classic fit or a slimmer contemporary fit, Edwin has you covered.
Edwin is famous for their innovation when it comes to washes and detailing. The range of washes on offer includes everything from raw unwashed denim, for those who like to develop their own patterning, to light, mid and heavier washes for customers wanting a lighter, pre-faded look. Details like whiskering and fading are available and colours cover the full spectrum of indigos and blacks.
With the latest Made in Japan collection, all Edwin denims are skillfully made by a company that has been at the forefront of denim expertise for decades. These jeans are all produced, treated and finished in Japan and represent great value for the casual wearer and denim connoisseur alike. The brand uses a range of high quality Japanese fabrics in their jeans including their signature Edwin rainbow and red listed selvedge denims, meaning there’s sure to be something in the range to suit every denim wearer.
